WordPress gives you everything, including the maintenance

WordPress is the right answer when a restaurant group has technical help on hand, because nothing else offers the same control, and it is the wrong answer when it does not, because that control arrives attached to a maintenance obligation that a kitchen cannot service. The comparison below is about that obligation rather than about features, since on features WordPress wins most lists.

01

Nobody is arguing that WordPress cannot do it

It can. There is a plugin for reservations, a plugin for menus, a plugin for events, a theme that looks like the restaurant you want to be, and enough control over markup and structured data to do genuinely excellent technical work. Every criticism below is about the running of it, not the capability of it. If you have a developer, WordPress is a fine choice and we would say so to your face.

02

The part that catches restaurants: who applies the updates

WordPress.org states on its own security page that only the latest version is officially supported, with fixes backported to older versions as a courtesy, and it directs hosts to its Advanced Administration handbook for securing the hosting environment. In other words, on a self-hosted install the job of staying current belongs to whoever runs the site. In a restaurant, that person is usually the owner, and the owner is running a restaurant. This is how a site ends up three major versions behind with a contact form plugin that stopped being maintained two years ago.

03

Plugin stacking is the other slow failure

A restaurant WordPress site typically accumulates a page builder, a menu plugin, a reservations plugin, a gallery plugin, a caching plugin to undo the weight of the first four, a security plugin, and a form plugin. Each one is another author who might stop maintaining their work, another update that can conflict, and another set of scripts loading before a guest sees a dish. That is where the speed goes. Our pages are custom coded and ship almost no unnecessary code, which is why the 90+ PageSpeed number is something we can guarantee rather than hope for.

04

What the two arrangements actually cost in a year

The WordPress license is free and that is the number everybody quotes. The honest annual figure adds hosting, a premium theme, several paid plugins, a developer for the things that break, and the hours somebody at the restaurant spends editing the menu. Ours is a single monthly fee that carries the build, the hosting, the domain, the updates, the weekly articles and the people doing all of it, with the one-time build fee invoiced only after the site is live. We publish every figure on the pricing page rather than asking you to request a quote.

Side by side

The rows below are the ones that actually decide it for a chef-led kitchen. Where a cell describes WordPress, it either reports something read on their own documentation or says plainly that we are not claiming it.

Choose them

When WordPress is genuinely the better choice

This is the competitor with the strongest honest case against us, and it would be dishonest to bury it.

  • You have a developer, in house or on retainer, who already maintains other things for you.
  • You need something unusual: a custom ordering integration, a members area, a multilingual site with a workflow behind it.
  • Complete portability matters to you more than anything else. A WordPress site can be moved anywhere; our page code cannot.
  • You run a restaurant group with an internal marketing team who want to publish without asking anyone.
  • You already have a well-maintained WordPress site that is fast and current, in which case leave it alone.

Choose us

When the managed site is the better choice

The case for us is not that WordPress is bad. It is that an unmaintained WordPress site is bad, and most restaurant WordPress sites are unmaintained by month nine.

  • Nobody at the restaurant is going to apply updates, and you would rather that simply not be a job that exists.
  • The current site has quietly gone stale and the last person who understood it has moved on.
  • You want the speed guaranteed rather than fought for against a plugin stack.
  • You want the menu changed by sending a message rather than by opening an editor.
  • You want articles published weekly without hiring a writer.

Together

Moving off WordPress without losing what you have earned

A rebuild is only worth doing if it keeps the search position the old site already has. That is the part we take seriously.

  1. 01We map every existing page address to its new equivalent and put redirects in place, so old links keep working.
  2. 02Pages worth keeping, such as your story, your press coverage and any articles that actually earn traffic, are migrated across.
  3. 03Your WordPress export stays yours. We do not need you to delete anything, and you can keep the old install running privately until you are satisfied.
  4. 04Rankings for individual pages can move slightly during any rebuild. The intent is continuity, and we will not promise you that nothing shifts.

In their words

What restaurant teams tell us

  • They pushed us to be precise about seasonal dining menus, which felt slow at first and right at the end. The boundaries are drawn clearly: what the site settles, and what our people still decide. Correcting the site's accidental promises is no longer part of our calls.

  • The idea that visitors could sort themselves before writing seemed obvious only in hindsight. The sender picks the route, which means the best-informed person does the sorting. Returning customers no longer repeat the whole form to ask one question.

  • Everyone talks about the new design; I cared more about where the old seasonal dining menus links would land. We reviewed the full redirect map before launch and checked the destinations ourselves. Not one ‘your link is broken’ message arrived after launch.

Questions about WordPress

Is WordPress bad for a restaurant?

No. An unmaintained WordPress site is bad, and most restaurant sites become unmaintained, because the work of updating them falls on somebody who is running a restaurant. WordPress.org states that only the latest version is officially supported.

We already have a WordPress site. Do we have to leave it?

Not if it is fast, current and somebody is maintaining it. If it is three versions behind with plugins nobody has touched in a year, that is when it is worth talking.

Can you work on our existing WordPress site instead of rebuilding?

No. Our plans cover sites we build and host, because we can only guarantee speed and uptime on something we control end to end.

Will we lose our Google rankings if we move?

We map your existing page addresses to their new equivalents with redirects so old links land correctly, and we migrate the pages that actually earn traffic. Individual page positions can move during any rebuild and we will not pretend otherwise.

What happens to our WordPress content?

It stays yours. Take an export, keep the install running privately if you like, and we use your menu, story and worthwhile pages as the starting material for the rebuild.

Why not just use a caching plugin to get the speed up?

Caching helps, but it treats the symptom. The weight comes from a page builder plus six plugins loading their own scripts on every page. We build the pages instead, which is why the 90+ number is a guarantee rather than a target.

Is WordPress cheaper?

The license is free. The honest annual figure adds hosting, a theme, paid plugins, developer time for what breaks, and the hours somebody at the restaurant spends on the menu. Our figure is one monthly fee, published on the pricing page.

Can we get the code if we leave you?

The domain is registered in your name and we transfer it free. The content is yours. The page code stays with the studio, which is the honest trade-off for a managed service, and WordPress genuinely beats us on this point.

Do you use WordPress behind the scenes?

No. The pages are custom coded and served from a global edge network, which is what makes the speed guarantee possible.
